Our rescued wolf, Judge.
Judge was confiscated from a hunter by Ukrainian Borders Guards. The hunter was going to use him to breed with a Pitbull to try and create a new more vicious breed. He spent a couple of weeks with us in Kherson while we were searching for a sanctuary or zoo to take him. He now lives at Mezhigoriye, Kiev, Ukraine, ex-president Yankovich's private zoo. It is a start of the art facility and he really has a good life now. He will be introduced to another orphaned cub soon.  He is now about 4 months old and was just over 2 months when we received him. We would have like to send him to a sanctuary where he could be rehabilitated and sent back to the wild, but unfortunately there are none available in Ukraine. Below are a few photos of Judge.

HELP SAVE THE KHERSON BEARS
My name is Lionel de Lange, and I am a South African ex-pat now living in Ukraine. I opened a chapter of the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO) because of the work the late Lawrence Anthony did in Iraq, when he saved the starving animals that were affected by the war. His passion for animals and all things living inspired me to step up at this desperate time.
The conditions for some of these animals is shocking and there is no funding allocated to some zoo's whatsoever and funding to all zoo's around the country has been cut by the government. Apart from the assistance we are providing to zoo's around the country we have started work on a project in the city of Kherson, Ukraine. The “zoo” is situated on an island on the Dnieper river. This is an ex-privately owned zoo where the animals are living in horrendous inhumane conditions. There are 5 Brown bears living in a combined area of 42 sq/m. There is no other word to describe it, “A prison” made completely of steel and metal bars which includes a steel floor.

Why The LAEO of UKRAINE needs you and your support:
Apart from coming out of a long winter where the visitor attendance drops to zero, you may know about the extreme political and economic unrest in Ukraine presently, but what you may not be aware of is the effect it is having on the animals at some of the Ukrainian zoos. While many of us are consumed with our own needs and daily lives, sometimes there are others who occasionally need our assistance in order to survive through an immediate crisis. Please take a minute to learn about this very important initiative and what LAEO is doing to handle it.

Right now, in Ukraine, there are thousands of animals at the mercy of kind people under intense economic duress willing to donate food and supplies in order to ensure the animals stay alive. Read more.....

International President of LAEO based in Los Angeles visits Ukraine, 2 Jun - 9 Jun 2014.
After the first three months of operation of our new LAEO Ukraine, LAEO's International President and Director of the U.S. headquarters, came to Ukraine to do a standard inspection to see our progress and to meet the Directors of the zoos we are working with, and tour the facilities.  Here's what she said about our work.

"I am extremely proud to see the work that Lionel de Lange and his staff and volunteers are doing.  This group has gotten up and running more quickly than any other group we have worked with and they are doing a fantastic job in supplying food, medical supplies, and medical treatment to those animals and zoos in need.  The quality of their work has been acknowledged world-wide, and I am delighted to see the many letters of thanks and appreciation for their good work that we have received from Ukrainian zoo directors, veterinarians, city mayors, and other key officials.

LAEO's international headquarters gives our heartfelt thanks to Lionel and his team for what they have accomplished, and we look forward to their continued progress in helping animals in need in Ukraine."

Carte Blanche reporting on LAEO in Ukraine.
When people go to war, animals often get caught in the chaos. Trapped in zoos or fenced into game parks, they can’t escape... Like the thousands of starving animals in zoos across Ukraine where civil unrest rages.
